Great News from DC General!
We’ve got big news for you today. It’s an announcement that could change everything for the young people we serve at the DC General Family Shelter. This fall, for the first time ever, the Playtime Project will be moving forward with plans to completely reshape the landscape inside the shelter.
We’ll be transforming the long-abandoned lobby of the old hospital into a beautiful space where our youth are able to explore, learn, and grow into healthy and well-prepared adults. Coming this October, the Playtime Preteen & Teen Space will provide stable ground for young people experiencing homelessness with their first-ever designated space designed to meet their needs.
Revealing the Transformation
At our lovely Fall Fundraiser last Saturday at the home of Liz and Ty Voyles, volunteer designer Gabe Peyton unveiled his vision for the renovation of the new youth space. With the help of renderings from Florencia Bialet, he showed us a vision that took our breath away. This is a vision that will be realized not in a year, not in a decade, but this October! Look at these amazing before and after images prepared by Ms. Bialet:

And the amazing space to come October 21:
Do these images seem unbelievable to you? Can you imagine that this transformation can take place before winter sets in? You haven’t heard the truly incredible part yet: You’re invited to be a part of the renovation!
Service Days: October 10th & 17th
Can’t wait to see the Preteen & Teen Space become reality? You can help us build it!
We have two opportunities for you to be directly involved in the renovation work. On both October 10th and 17th, come join us as we paint, hammer, clean, resurface, and organize the new space. Be a part of history as we create something alive and beautiful for our young people.
We hope that you are able to join us as we make this dream a reality!
Ribbon Cutting: October 21st
Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 21st. The Preteen & Teen Space will go live that evening at 6 pm with a ribbon cutting attended by Playtime’s friends, volunteers, staff, public officials, and community leaders. Buoyed by a $30k grant from Lowe’s, we are seeking additional funds to support this project and its programming, so please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org if you have ideas for corporate or individual sponsorships.
