We’re starting the countdown! There’s just over 10 weeks until our annual Heroes of Play 5K run/walk, scheduled for Saturday, October 14 at Anacostia Park. And we’re super excited to announce that award-winning journalist Lesli Foster will be our Grand Marshal.

Lesli is a mainstay of Washington news as a weeknight anchor for WUSA9 evening broadcasts. As part of WUSA9’s Special Assignment Unit, she leads the “impact” coverage that tackles community issues. Foster joined the station in 2001 and has been recognized with Emmy, Edward R. Murrow, and Associated Press Awards. She graduated from Howard University and is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. In 2012, she formed “Girlfriends Give Back,” which helps raise funds for a small, but impactful regional charity each year. And Playtime was fortunate to be the 2013 beneficiary.

“Every child and every family deserves to have a permanent home to call their own,” said Lesli. “I am grateful to be part of this effort to shine a light on this problem in our community – and to walk side by side with Playtime to demonstrate how all of us are interconnected. We can make a difference, step by step.”

Lesli will kick off the event, and present prizes during the closing ceremony. We’re planning a fun event for participants of all ages and abilities, and we encourage both runners and walkers to come out in support of play and to dress up as their favorite real-life or fictional superhero to make it extra fun!

So, what’s the point of all this? The event will raise funds for more than 700 children, who, because of circumstances out of their control, live in temporary housing across Washington, D.C. We want to create a world that provides every opportunity for children in families experiencing homelessness to play and learn. And to do that, we offer transformative play programs that reduce the effects of trauma, increase resiliency, and eliminate chronic family homelessness. With your help, we can achieve this mission, because every penny raised will help fund programming—including field trips, healthy snacks, arts and crafts, and supplies—that directly benefits children and youth.

You can participate as an individual, form a team, or join a team already in place. Once you register, create a fundraising page to share with your networks – tell your neighbors, your coworkers, your congregation, your family … tell everyone to sponsor you! Because throughout August, a generous donor will match up to $10,000 if participants raise this amount by August 30. That means every dollar you raise in August will be doubled! We’ll also give away prizes for the team or individual that raises the most. Registration costs $35 (waived for children ages 12 and under) and includes a T-shirt featuring our super cool 5K logo. Raise at least $100, and you’ll get the $35 refunded.

If you can’t participate in the event, consider sponsoring one of our Heroes of Play as they strive to meet the challenge.

Whether you run, walk, or sponsor a participant, you have the power to make a significant difference for children and youth experiencing homelessness.
