Join a Special Group of Heroes

Because of dedicated donors and volunteers like you, Playtime has brought the power of play to thousands of children living in family shelters throughout the District of Columbia for the past 15 years. As Petula Dvorak of the Washington Post said recently, play stimulates brain development for children, and your support is “creating not Pop Rocks, but fireworks” in their brains!

Today, more than 1,000 children currently live in the city’s overflow shelter hotels. As the city begins rolling out its seven new smaller shelters, the need for Playtime continues to be great. Our work is as important now as it was when we started in 2003.

That’s why we’ve set an ambitious year-end campaign goal of $150,000. In September, we added two additional overflow shelter motel sites, and as we look toward a new year, we hope to continue following the children by offering programming at one or more of the city’s new short-term family shelters. As the District spreads its model to serve families experiencing homelessness across the city, Playtime also must adapt its model to serve families in these smaller shelters. That means more staff to oversee each program, and a bigger volunteer recruitment strategy.

To continue to adapt and grow, Playtime needs your ongoing support. We invite you to join our monthly giving program, the Playtime Building Blocks. Your monthly support allows us to respond to children who join our programs throughout the year, to provide clean and safe spaces for play, transportation for field trips, training for volunteers, and healthy snacks for every child.

As a Building Block, you join a special group of heroes committed to ensuring safe and fun play for children living in homelessness. Together, we can expand access to transformative play experiences to the most vulnerable population in Washington, D.C.
