Dear Councilmember ____,
I live in Ward ___ and support the Homeless Children’s Playtime Project which sees firsthand the devastating effects of rising homelessness in our city. While the city has made progress sheltering homeless families and planning for replacement shelters when DC General closes, we are concerned that these crucial efforts will not end homelessness without significant increase in investments to make housing affordable for families.
I ask that you do everything in your power to make sure that the city:
- Fully funds Homeward DC, the Mayor’s plan to end homelessness,
- Invests more in the Local Rent Supplement Program (LRSP) for low-income families in need of affordable housing, and
- Creates more affordable housing for families using the the Housing Production Trust Fund.
The city’s ability to make these investments is hampered by $100 million in tax cuts. I hope you will encourage the city council to, at least, hold off on the $40 million in estate tax and business tax cuts and instead help fund our city’s goals to end homelessness.
